Welcome to the first issue of the Southern Berkshire Ambulance Squad newsletter. We’ll be sharing news, stories, and updates from South County’s ambulance service each month. Thank you for reading.

In this issue: a paramedic saves a life, we celebrate 50 years of Jim Santos, our finances explained, and more.

Paramedic Kevin Brown Saves Man’s Life After Stroke

A family member of stroke victim thanks Paramedic Kevin Brown for helping save his life.

Quick intervention by Paramedic Kevin Brown made the difference for a Great Barrington man who suffered a stroke earlier this summer. Kevin recognized the signs early, initiated treatment en route, and coordinated directly with the receiving hospital. The patient made a full recovery and came back to thank the crew in person.

This is the kind of outcome that paramedic-level care makes possible. Our ALS crews train constantly so that when seconds count, they’re ready.

Congratulations Jim Santos on 50 Years of Service

Board Chair Jim Santos celebrates 50 years of service.

This year marks Jim Santos’s 50th year with Southern Berkshire Ambulance Squad. Jim began as a volunteer in 1975 and has served in virtually every role the organization has had — EMT, crew chief, and now President of the Board. His dedication to South County is unmatched and we are grateful for every one of those 50 years.

Our Finances: A Message from our CFO

Southern Berkshire Ambulance Squad is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We receive funding from town assessments, insurance reimbursements, and community donations. Medicare and Medicaid cover the majority of our calls, but reimbursement rates have not kept pace with our costs.

Each year, we work to close the gap between what we receive and what it costs to provide 24/7 paramedic service. Your donations make that possible. Thank you.
